Get Ready To Say Buh-Bye To Pop-Ups!   by wmull [6:32 pm ET - Jun. 21, 2001]
That's right! Those of you who visit this site are going to have to start doing without some things.... but I'm 100% sure nobody's going to miss them! At the end of this month, no more of those ultra-uncool, perpetually annoying (or is that annoyingly perpetual?), maniacally-multiplying..... ever-evil pop-ups! That's when the campaign is set to end, and I'm upholding my end of the bargain by holding out until then before I get rid of them. But that little experiment gone wrong will be a thing of the past! And there was much rejoicing......

Although our new files section isn't completely set up (for instance the login / registration hasn't been implemented, uploads aren't turned on quite yet, and the review center features haven't been integrated yet), you can now download Rune files from our trans-network Files Section, of which Rune News is of course an important part! We've still got a long way to go before it's truly ready for prime time, but we wanted to let everyone know they can go ahead and check it out at files.mindlessgames.com.

Files Section / Review Center Downtime   by wmull [3:14 am ET - Jun. 5, 2001]
I apologize for the Files Section / Review Center's downtime the last few days, but we're in the middle of switching everything to a new, much improved Linux server (the old server was using NT), and we also discovered a nasty memory leak in the asp code the Files Section had been built upon. So, we're rewriting the Files Section / Review Center in PHP w/ mySQL database (the old code had no database), so as you can imagine, this opens up a whole new world for us! Hopefully by the end of the week, we'll have these sections back up and you'll begin to see some of the fruits of our labors! In the meantime, feel free to vent in our Forums :)

Hey Mikey, They Liked It!   by
wmull [10:32 am ET - May 5, 2001]
Game Revolution gave Rune: HoV a B+ rating. Here's a blurb:
To the delight of veterans and newbies alike, Halls of Valhalla is both an expansion to the original and a stand-alone online multiplayer game. It features new skins, new maps, new modes and a new bug fixing patch for owners of the original Rune. And at under 20 dollars it is easily one of this year's best bets for action gamers.
Although they didn't like the new female skins, we won't hold that against them....

Tim Talking Euro Trash!   by wmull [7:05 pm ET - May 4, 2001]
EuroGamer has conducted an excellent and quite thorough interview with Tim Gerritsen of Human Head, covering their Blair Witch game, Rune and the HoV "expansion pack", Atlas' Rune pen-and-paper RPG, and the news that Human Head is now working on an unannounced PlayStation 2 title. Here's a little teaser, talking about the new Headball mode in Halls of Valhalla:
Back when Rune was finishing up, we had talked about other modes we wanted to do. We talked about the old Aztec game of Jai Alai where you threw a ball through a hoop (a bit like basketball). In the Aztec society, the team that lost got their heads cut off. We thought, let's cut out the middle man and make a game that allowed you to use limbs and heads
as the method of scoring.
There's lots more where that came from, so be sure to check out the rest!

The Bloodletting Continues!   by wmull [10:58 am ET - May 4, 2001]
GameSpot gives the not-for-free Halls of Valhalla expansion pack the ol' bend-over-insertion that's unfortunately become routine with this title:
If you're already familiar with last year's Viking action game, Rune, and weren't impressed with its multiplayer experience to begin with, then you might as well skip the rest of this review. Halls of Valhalla isn't going to change your mind. If for some reason you did enjoy Rune's lackluster deathmatch mode, you still might want to hold off on Halls of Valhalla. It simply takes the weakest part of the original game and repackages it with a few ultimately inconsequential bonuses--and then it ends up being even less impressive than that description.
Agree? Disagree? Head to our forums and be heard!

 Oh, That's Harsh!   by wmull [12:51 am ET - May 3, 2001]
Geez, I'm tending to like the game a lot more than the reviews, but maybe that's just me. Anywho, GamesDomain reviewed the not-for-free Rune expansion pack, Halls of Valhalla, and pretty much said what everyone else who's reviewed it has been saying, more or less:
Considering that the game ships with a level editor and so many maps, there's a fair amount of replay value. Unfortunately, the core of the game, melee combat, isn't very satisfying. Expect fleeting fun from Rune: Halls of Valhalla, but little long-lasting entertainment.
These kinds of reviews are always fun to read, but the true test, as they say (and you know who THEY are) is in the arena. Also, as you'll recall, we treated the title a whole lot better than these guys did, because we actually liked the game before we played the add-on. Snarf.

Rune PS2 Box Art and Rune Gold PC   by Gwynhala [6:11 pm ET - Apr. 27, 2001]
While surfing for news of Rune: Halls Of Valhalla at ebGmaes.com we came upon two surprises.

First, we found a shot of the packaging, and a description of Rune: Viking Warlord, the Rune title for Playstation 2 due this July.

The second thing that caught our eye was a reference to a PC title called Rune Gold PC. Wazzap wit' dat? Our best guess is it's Rune + HoV in a single box. The ebGames site says it'll be out in August.

Two More Days to HoV!   by Gwynhala [2:11 pm ET - Apr. 22, 2001]
Our countdown continues as Rune: Halls of Valhalla ships to stores on Tuesday (expect it on the shelves a few days after that). Woohoo!

The parent site of RuneNews, Mindless Games and Entertainment is doing final layout of a comprehensive review of the Rune add-on pack, including screen shots and a mini-review of every new map and every new player model.

You'll also get the rundown on Human Head's new gameplay modes: Head-Ball and Arena Match. In Head-Ball, you chop off someone's head and throw it into a goal zone to score. In Arena Match, you get a llama-proof individual or team dueling mod.

We'll publish a link to the review as soon as it's up. You can also watch for it yourself in the Reviews Section of Mindless Games. If you nose around a bit, you might even...ZzzzzzzAP!

IMPORTANT: Password Stealing Scam   by Gwynhala [2:04 am ET - Apr. 21, 2001]
This is off topic, but forewarned is forearmed. If you're an Earthlink user and get mail allegedly from admin@corp.earthlink.net with the title, "Important Account Information!" asking you to log into a secure e-mail site in the next 72 hours, DON'T DO IT!. Check the URLS (without clicking on them) and you'll see that they go to a password-stealer site in Russia. I checked this out with Earthlink tech support and they confirmed that it is a scam. This has been a public service announcement.

Gwynhala just released Version Alpha 0.2 of Pygmalion Animator, a tool for importing and exporting meshes, textures, and (soon) animations from Rune. This release lets Windows NT / Windows 2000 users bring multiply-skinned meshes into Rune from .3DS, .OBJ, or .MD2 files. It can also export Rune meshes to .OBJ files, and view animations from Rune, Quake 2, and Heretic II. A separate tutorial download offers instructions, content, and sample code that imports a brain mesh to use as a food item in Rune.

Pygmalion Version Alpha 0.2: Gimme, gimme, gimme!
Rune Model Import Tutorial: I'd like one of those, too!

In related news, Gwynhala recently opened a Rune 3D modeling site here on RuneNews.com, and has since received nearly a dozen offers of work as a male model. Are't cookies and context-insensitive web page scrubbers great?

Experimental Player Model for Rune   by Gwynhala [10:19 am PT - Jan. 20, 2001]
As an experiment to help the mod community with getting the code for new player models right, I created a duplicate set of player models for Rune. These models are identical to Ragnar, Ulf, the Elder, etc, except that they are semi-transparent (look like ghosts) so that you can tell them apart from the originals. Also, their parent skeletal model is named "Dupnar" instead of "Ragnar". Download the ZIP and follow the instructions in DupnarPatch.txt.

    http://rune.mindlessgames.com/files.asp?dir=/rigfolk&file=DupnarPatch.zip

NOTE: THERE ISN'T ENOUGH IN THIS PACKAGE TO LET YOU USE THE NEW PLAYER MODELS IN RUNE. THE PACKAGE IS INTENDED FOR ADVANCED MOD MAKERS WHO WANT TO EXPERIMENT WITH WRITING CODE THAT WILL, EVENTUALLY, ALLOW NEW PLAYER MODELS.

Dungeon Master New Version + Website Up   by Za0oO [10:03 am PT - Jan. 18, 2001]
Elite_Ravager released yet another update of his Rune Mod, Dungeon Master. You can see a list of the fixed bugs below:

-fixed bug where mage wasn't getting experience points for using the blaze spell
-barbarian's rage ability now requires the use to rest between use(an icon in the lower right hand corner depicts whether you are rested up enough to use the ability)
-thief is now completely invisible when he successfully hides, but the dice rolls required are more strict than before
-fixed bug where going into water would stop runepower regeneration
-raised aim of projectile spells a little bit to make them easier to use
-experience points earned are now multiplied by the level of the person killed(so you get more experience for killing more powerful characters)
-fixed bug in scoreboard that was making yellow team red(don't ask...)

Also, the website of the mod has gone live, it's currently in construction, but you can download the mod and you can access it via this link.

KalCorp's Vas Rune Mods   by Gwynhala [4:11 am PT - Jan. 14, 2001]
KalCorp has just released three smokin' Rune mutators.

VasFlameArena replaces all axes, hammers and swords with a new weapon, the VasFlaming Sword. VasHead replaces your head with a VasHead that can be powered up, and includes Highlander-style kill effects. VasRunePowerKing is a king-of-the-hill mod; only the king can use weapon power ups, and to become king you have to kill the king. The more frags the king gets, the more power he gets.

If you register on his site, you can get all three the mutators at http://vasserver.dyndns.org/vasrune/default.asp

     Dungeon Master v0.2 Beta Released   by Za0oO [9:54 pm PT - Jan. 13, 2001]
Elite_Ravager just released it's second release of the Rune mod called Dungeon Master. Here's the updates list from last version:

-fixed bug where being crushed by doors or other level-based damage was giving players experience points(doh!).
-fixed cleric and mage runepower regeneration(it would take FOREVER to regenerate if you experienced bad lag for any reason).
-fighter now regenerates runepower(although MUCH slower than cleric or mage).
-added a few more things to the viewstatistics command(like name, shield
    health, etc.).
    -some other minor stuff...

You may grab the Dungeon Master v0.2 Beta right here.

     Rune For PS2?   by wmull [7:25 pm PT - Jan. 8, 2001]
Thanks to ExitWound over at Mindless Games (hmm, seems I've heard of that site somewhere) for letting me know about this very interesting update he noticed on Daily Radar:
According to IGNPS2, Rockstar Games is considering a PlayStation2 port of the Viking-based action game, Rune. The company is believed to be making an announcement concerning the next PS2 port over the coming days, and IGNPS2 is betting that game will be Rune. Of course Rockstar is remaining tight-lipped about the whole thing, but as soon as we know more, we'll let you know.
Sounds to me like a good excuse to buy a Playstation 2 (as if Dead or Alive 2 and/or Tekken Tag Tournament weren't reason enough), if you can find one!

Dungeon Master Mod Released   by Za0oO [3:05 pm PT - Jan. 8, 2001]
I've just received an e-mail from Elite_Ravager telling me that his Rune mod Dungeon Master has been released. You can grab it right here, or by our files section.

How To Back Up Saved Games   by wmull [2:58 pm PT - Jan. 8, 2001]
We recently got an email asking how you back up your saved games, if you're re-installing Rune for whatever reason. Here's how we do it:
    1. Make a new folder somewhere (suppose it is called OldGames), and copy everything from Rune\Save into it
    2. Re-install Rune
    3. Run Rune. Start a new game. Go to the Save Game screen. Save the current game in each save game slot.
    4. Quit Rune.
    5. Copy everything from OldGames (or whatever you called it) to Rune\Save
    6. Run Rune. Go to the Load Game screen. The games will all have the wrong names. To fix this, load each game and immediately save it back. For example, load the 3rd game, and save it back as the 3rd game, and this will fix the name.
    Thanks, Gwynhala!

Rune Mesh Viewer Alpha 0.1a   by Gwynhala [1:29 am PT - Jan. 8, 2001]
Brand new in the files section, download our mini version of Pygmalion (umsviewer.zip), that lets you view any animation frame of any Rune model.

Use File->Open, select the .UMS file type, and browse to Rune/meshes to open a package. Then select the mesh and animation frame you want to see. Here's a screenshot of the snowbeast, howling at the moon (kind of how I feel after finally getting the UMS mesh import code working!)

Rune Coding Tutorials Online!   by wmull [3:53 pm PT - Jan. 7, 2001]
Grin (who many of you will know from Raven-Games.com and her Grin's Place of Heretic II Goodness, which includes her excellent Gin Bots), has put together some coding tutorials that others might find useful. Please direct yourselves to our Rune Coding Tutorials. The first tutorial in the series is Adding New Weapons to Rune, which describes the creation of three new weapons. These weapons are not swords, but are furniture items that can be wielded, thrown and smashed. Sounds like fun? Check it out :)

Warhammer Brings It On Down!   by wmull [10:02 pm PT - Jan. 6, 2001]
Please welcome newest hosted site member Andrew 'LiZaRd' Dominam, who has begun work on his first Rune modification, Warhammer, based entirely on the fantasy wargame of the same name. • 'Team arena', where squads will compete together against another squad
  • classes: orcs + goblins, dwarves, humans, elves, undead, etc. squads will mostly consist of the same race
  • maps
  • new weapons (bow, javelin, etc.)
  • He's also looking for some dedicated individuals to help him bring this project to life, including:
  • level design (maybe, 1)
  • coders (2)
  • model makers (2)

Human Head Business Director Tim Gerritsen sends out love to the fans and a big "chill out" to the naysayers in his January 4 Message to Rune Fans. There's also a Rune Add-On Pack in the works that will focus on kick-ass multi-player action, and some "REALLY big news" Tim's not ready to talk about just yet. Now, RuneNews.com has no idea what this big news might be, but check out this "want-ad" on Human Head's home page and draw your own conclusions.

     3D Spotlight Rune Tweak Guide   by Za0oO [6:06 pm PT - Jan. 2, 2001]
3D Spotlight have once more posted yet another game tweak guide. This time they cover Rune, here's the obligatory snip:
Actor Shadows. Setting this to None disables shadows for other models. Blob enables simple circular shadows. Projected will enable volumetric shadows. Enabling shadows will reduce performance, particularly when set to Projected. This will also cause a higher performance drop than enabling shadows for the player.

Min Desired Framerate. Set this to equal to whatever you feel is the minimum for a playable game. 30 should be the ideal minimum frame rate for most users. This specifies the frame rate threshold below which Rune will start dropping detail - reducing model detail and not drawing optional effects. If this is set higher than your normal frame rate, then you will never see reduced graphics almost always, but get the best possible performance. The ideal setting for this is about 10 frames below your average frame rate, otherwise you'll drop off too much detail. When benchmarking it would be best to set this to 0 to give a more accurate indication of real performance (see later on in the guide for how to benchmark Rune).

Pygmalion Project On Course!   by wmull [12:22 am PT - Dec. 31, 2000]
Our own Gwynhala updated his .plan file currently residing at Raven-Games.com with the news that he's testing the Rune model viewing features of his Pygmalion multi-game animation program that he's been steadfastly working on these past weeks. No one can explain it as well as he, so here's the jist:
I figured out why the goblin was so twisted (see the 12/19 update). The fixes are coded, and Pygmalion can now read and display any animation frame of any Rune .SCM model. Time to plug in the animation sequence playing code from GwynFlex!
Take a gander at the aforementioned goblin's base frame, which is our latest Featured Screenshot.

Rune Highly Commended!   by wmull [11:21 pm PT - Dec. 29, 2000]
Rune got the Highly Commended Award for GameSpot UK's Action Game of the Year:
While the choice of winner of our Action category proved relatively straightforward, the battle for second place was even more highly contentious. Claims were advanced, withdrawn, thrust forward and then sent back again but after much discussion, debate and a few horns of mead, Human Head Studio's Viking-themed hack 'n' slasher Rune got the decisive vote. It was chosen for its beautiful looks, unremitting action and, er, forthright views on the issue of violence in video games. Norsey, but nice.
And you can check out the entire article here.

Player At Rune   by wmull [5:34 pm PT - Dec. 17, 2000]
German gaming site, player.at has given Rune an 8 of 10 review. It's in German, but that just gives us an excuse to utilize that ever useful BabelFish for spits and giggles:
Ragnar is a young Wikinger, which matured even only to the krieger, when already a heavy function expects it. Bad powers have themselves swore, the Ragnarok, thus the world fall to cause. With sword, axe and war hammer you pull alone against the putting ions of the bad one.

Thanks to Shawn 'Heimdall' Cantu who sent us this quick little mutator he created that completely removes all runes (not just Runes of Power), and also disables Bloodlust. You can download it right here from our Files Section.

Version 1.01 of RuneFan TrueType Font   by Gwynhala [1:37 am PT - Dec. 7, 2000]
Version 1.01 of the RuneFan font is now available in our file downloads section. This TrueType font by Gwynhala includes characters that strongly resemble those in the official Rune logo. Created with permission from Human Head Studios. Improvements in Version 1.01 include:
    - Renamed font to RuneFan to avoid conflicts with existing commercial font named Rune (a cool Elder Futhark font).
    - Added Unicode Latin-1 and Windows CP-1252 character set support (for many European languages).
    - Added Macintosh version of font, as a Roman font (no special Mac characters).
    - Adjusted spacing and baseline on I and several other characters.
    - Modified glyph shapes for better screen appearance at low point sizes.
